Key West Lobstering & Island Exploration
Dive down, tickle him out, net him. Then eat him. Hard to beat.
Captain Rio's Charters runs private lobstering trips out of Key West during Florida's spiny lobster season, which runs 6 August to 31 March, plus a two-day mini-season on the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday of July. The limit is six lobster per person per day and guests aboard a licensed charter vessel do not need their own license.
The experience
What the day actually looks like
Catching your own spiny lobster is one of those things that sounds complicated and turns out to be enormously good fun. You freedive or snorkel down, find one wedged back under a ledge or sitting in the grass with just its antennae showing, coax it out with a tickle stick, and drop the net behind it. Rio teaches the technique on the way out and it clicks fast.
The limit is six per person per day, they have to measure at least three inches across the carapace, and — importantly — you don't need to buy your own license. Rio's charter credentials cover recreational lobstering for everyone on board, and he handles the measuring and the rules so nobody has to think about it.
The rest of the day is the part people don't expect to love as much as they do: wading sandbars, poking into mangrove creeks looking for wildlife, snorkelling the backcountry, and getting out onto little islands that you simply cannot reach without a boat and someone who knows where they are.

Questions
Key West Lobstering & Island Exploration FAQ
When is lobster season in Key West?
Florida's spiny lobster season runs from 6 August to 31 March. There is also a two-day recreational mini-season on the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday of July, which is extremely popular and worth booking well ahead.
Do I need a fishing or lobster license?
No. Guests aboard a licensed charter vessel are covered by the captain's credentials for recreational lobstering, so you do not need to buy your own.
How many lobster can we keep?
Six per person per day during the regular season, and six per person during the mini-season. Each one has to measure more than three inches across the carapace — Captain Rio does the measuring.
How do you actually catch a spiny lobster?
You freedive or snorkel down to a ledge or grass patch, work the lobster out backwards with a tickle stick, and catch it in a net behind. It takes a couple of tries to get the knack and Rio coaches you through it.
Can beginners do this?
Yes. If you can snorkel in shallow water you can catch lobster. Most of the spots are shallow enough that a single breath is plenty.
